I would like to introduce you to Carol Barton, who is a renown paper engineer and book artist who has been teaching classes in making pop-ups for over 25 years. Her pop-up illustrations have been featured in National Geographic Magazine and her books have been exhibited internationally and are collected by the Getty Museum, New York's Museum of Modern Art, and London's Victoria and Albert Museum, among others. She is on the faculty of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and lives in the charming historic community of Glen Echo, MD, in the suburbs of Washington, DC.
I met her on-line and was introduced to her books, The Pocket Paper Engineer How to Make Pop-Ups Step-by-Step version one and two. I went to look at the books on Amazon and everyone absolutely raved about her ability to break down the steps so that you can really make paper art. I am not sure how much this is a gift for a child, but for all you crafters and secret artists, I think you would really enjoy these books. A caveat, I have not read the book yet.
She also teaches workshops around the country. Here is where she is scheduled so far in 2009
April 6-7, Pop-Up Workshop, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee
May 2-3, Pop-Up Workshop, Society for Contemporary Craft, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,

We're not done with art, yet. So keep on reading.
