We have been here 3 years and have not been to Kennywood. The other day my daughter (age 11) looked at me and said, "I am the only kid in my school, maybe even Pittsburgh, who's never been to Kennywood". We have meant to but things have come up.  We have been to Universal Studios, and all of the Disney Parks, we have been to Sandcastle, Six Flags, Great Wolf Lodge, and various other carnivals.  This will be my opportunity to redeem myself in her eyes.

Our favorite time in the park is when it's late we have been through the exciting rides and at nightfall we go on the Ferris Wheel and see all of the lights to the park, feel the cool breeze and RELAX as a family. It wraps up the excitement of the day in a nice pretty bow.

Since we were unable to take a honeymoon we went to Kenywood. I guess arm in arm sharing ice cream, taking pictures, screaming our heads off in the rides and sipping hot chocolate were all great memories.

my favorite memory was when I was little I loved riding the whip with my friend and her dad.  Now I love watching my girls riding the whip with their dad.  They look as happy at that moment, going around the corner, as I felt years ago.

My favorite memory would be when I was a little girl my family and I would watch the shows and eat ice cream. I would watch all of the girl dancers and that is what I wanted to be when I grew up.. :)

I don't even think they have those shows anymore. It has been a few years since I have been there.

I haven't been to Kennywood since before Taryn was born. We just got back from Idlewild though, and she LOVED riding all the 'big kid' rides (she was too short to ride most last year).  I was just telling Chris that we should take her to Kennywood since there are more rides to choose from... Moms Rule Day sounds awesome!

My favorite Kennywood memory is back in the mid eighties, my mom and I would go to Kennywood during the last week of August when the High school bands paraded through the park at dusk.  My mom and I would load up first with a corn dog and lemonade, then a funnel cake, then sit back and watch the show!

My favorite memories of Kennywood was being with my family in Kiddie Land. I remember riding ponies and getting stuck on the hand operated cars and bawling my eyes out. I miss those days. I have no fond memories of when I grew up and went with my friends; only of with my family.

I now make memories with MY family...

I remember before our school picinic we always had to get a new outfit & shoes to match. This year my son was in kindergarten and he was going to Kennywood for the school picinic and all those memories came back the shopping, walking around the entire park to ride every ride. Talking to your old teachers from past grade levels. Eating the potato patch fries, corn dogs, but my family always met to eat dinner in the middle of the park at the cafeteria. I never gained weight because we walked so much.

We go to Kennywood at least once a year. It's a must!!!

We will carry on most of those traditions throught the next school picinic years.

I remember such silly things but they were so fun.  The night before we would go my sister and I wouldn't be able to sleep so we would make a list of all of the rides that were there the year before and talk about what new rides might be there!  We would also get new outfits for Kennywood and they usually matched.  I think this was totally an 80's thing- because we weren't the only ones.  Also, part of the fun before was picking your riding partner!  My best Kennywood memory by far was taking my kids there this mother's day and sharing new memeories with them!

I LOVE Kennywood!  It would not be a summer without a trip (or two) to Kennywood.  My favorite memory is when I was young and scared to go on my first rollercoaster - the Laser Loop.  My dad insisted.  Despite my protests, I went on.  The first thing I said when we stopped?  "Let's go on it again!"  I'm so happy that my boys love Kennywood now too and I get to share the joy with them!

Growing up in a large family with 7 children and being able to go to Kennywood was a special treat for us, happening only once a year. Leaving the park would be one of the hardest things to do; but my fondest memory would be of my mom riding the train through Kennywood to indicate that it was almost time to go. That train ride helped her to round up the crew because surely one of us would see her riding it and spread the word that we were to meet so we could leave. Now I am the proud parent of six children ages 1 1/2 - 17, and although we manage to get to the park twice each year, the tradition of riding the train lives on!

My favorite Kennywood memory is watching my 4 year old stand at the bottom of the Pittsburgh Plunge.  It was the first time so she was shocked to see a huge wave come over her!  She loved it!  She stood there again and the water actually knocked her off of her feet.

My memory of Kennywood is going as a band parent chaparone along with my husband for the Fall Fantasy.  One year we had several kids pass out from the heat.  It was utter chaos.  As one girl was passing out, I'm thinking "Catch the instrument - some parent paid good money for that!!"   Although it was work, we had good fun and many memories of the Fall Fantasy.  I choke up when I see parents and grandparents watch their child march in the Fall Fantasy for the first time.  The pride of the parents and the faces on the first time marchers is just a wonderful moment.

My most favorite memory from the wood, would be The Roter!!! I would eat as much food as I could and then go on the Roter! I loved how the floor would drop, and how the gravity would keep you stuck to the wall going round and round, putting one leg up sometimes both. I never threw up, that was my goal. However some people weren't as lucky. Please bring back The Roter!!! And before I moved, during the 4th of July I could see the fireworks from the patio even though we lived at least 4-5 miles away. I am the biggest Kennywood Fan ever!! Whewwwwwww!!!!!

My very favorite memory of Kennywood;  I was about 7 or 8 and my Mom and a neighbor took my siblings, their kids, and many of the neighbor kids on 2 buses.  We played, rode rides and of course ate all day.  When we heard the music it was time to head home.  We never left the park before the lights came on to guide us to the tunnel.  On the way home all of us kids fell asleep on each others shoulders.  A kind lady asked Mom "Are ALL those KIDS yours?" Mom said yes just until I get them home!  Today I enjoy watching my kids smile and giggle all day long.  We always play games and of course we eat Potatoe Patch and Corn dogs. Thanks for letting me share. Ps: I marched for 4 years in the parade that was always a Bonus from Kennywood!

My favorite Kennywood memory happened when my son was about 4 years old.    We were standing in line at the Merry Go Round, when I noticed that my foot was getting wet.   I couldn't tell where it was coming from.   Then, to my horror, I noticed that my son had decided that he needed to pee right while we were standing in line!   He had pulled his shorts down and just peed right there while everyone was standing in line!

My favorite Kennywood moment (or most memorable) is when my husband and I first started dating he took me to Kennywood for the first time as I am not originally from Pittsburgh. He thought it would be great to go on the Log Jammer-So we went-And I had Jeans on & it was 6PM--Which means for the rest of the evening I had to walk around soak and wet in jeans and enjoy the rides-We ended up getting engaged shortly after so I must not have been that annoyed. We continue to go each year and my 4 yr old son loves it.

My favorite Kennywood memory was when I was a little girl, maybe 6 or 7, my aunt (who is a nun...sister of charity) took me to Kennywood for the day. I really wanted to ride the laser loop and she actually took me on it. The man in charge of the ride told my aunt that she had to remove her "habit" in order to ride...I was sure we would not be getting on...but sure enough she took her habit off and we rode the laser loop. That has to be my favorite memory of all!

My best Kennywood memory is back when I was new to being a teen and it was the first time I was given permission to go to Kennywood with friends and without parents. It was Mothers Day back in the 70's and when Dad said he didn't have enough money for me to go.  My Mom gave me all the money she had just received as a Mothers Day gift from my older brother and his wife.  They would usually give her monetary gifts since they knew my Mom, a fulltime housewife, rarely had money of her own to spend .  I never forgot that sacrifice and how happy I was that she saw to it that I got to create a milestone Kennywood memory!  My Mom passed away in November so these memories are more precious than ever!

My daughter was 4 the first time she went to Kennywood as part of our school's Kennywood picnic day.  She was a preemie and was very petite.  As we walked through the front of the park, she realized that almost all of the rides were too big for her (she was not as tall as Kenny) When she approached  KiddieLand, and saw all of the rides that were just her size, she literally started shaking with excitement.  She is now starting her Senior Year of High school and it would be great to share another KennyWood memories before she moves away to college.

KENNYWOOD WAS THE BEST WHEN WESTINGHOUSE HAD IT'S ANUAL PIC-NIC!  MY DAD WOULD BRING HOME GIANT STACKS OF COLORED TICKETS!  I COULD HOLD THEM IN MY HANDS AND JUST IMAGINE THE THE RIDES WE COULD RIDE OVER AND OVER AND OVER....AND THEN, ON THE DAY OF THE PIC-NIC EVERYONE WOULD BRING THEIR FAMILIES AND ALL THEIR FOOD AND LEAVE EVERYTHING AT THE PIC-NIC TABLES, WHILE THE INITIAL WAVE OF MORNING RIDING TOOK PLACE.  IT WAS GREAT WHEN WE COULD GO BACK AND EAT, LISTEN TO THE RAFFLE GIVE AWAY TVS AND ELECTRIC FANS AND BEST OF ALL, (MY FAVORITE PART OF THE MEMORY) WAS THAT THE COMPANY WOULD SUPPLY A WHOLE, BIG COOLER OF ICE CREAM BARS AND SANDWICHES!!!!  IT DIDN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT!

Eating Potato Patch fries for the first time is something that sticks with you. I thought they were awesome. As for the rides, it would have to be going on the Thunderbolt. I have not spent a day at Kennywood since a year before I moved to Pittsburgh, oddly enough, 13 years ago, but I am sure the fries are just as good and the rides are just as fun!

My favorite memories of Kennywood are ALL MEMORIES!  We went at least once a year as kids and anticipated arrival at the park by the size of the Kennywood signs--they got bigger as we got closer!  The first tradition was to take a photo with the 'cowboy' on the bench and then we so enjoyed watching my parents ride as much as we enjoyed riding!!  Then as we became teens and into adulthood and parenthood, the start of the summer was the annual Carpenter's picnic with my Dad...loved watching him eat complimentary ice cream bars one after the other, show off his grandchildren, meet up with his fellow carpenters both retired and not!  And now that my Dad has passed away, the circle of life continues at Kennywood making new memories, such as the one I made last year....after losing over 100 lbs., I didn't fret getting on any ride because I knew I could fit on them all!!  I rode the Phantom for my first time and a second time and a third time and felt the spirit of my Dad cheering me on!!  Quite a thrill ....and memory!

Every year while I was growing up we would go to Kennywood for the Syria Shrine picnic.  My dad, being a Shriner, would love to take the family for a full day in the park that always ended with a concert by the Syria Shrine band.  Two things about those days that will always stick with me - the large truck parked by kiddieland that served buttermilk throughout the day and sitting at the bandstand watching the band play in the evenings.  It was during one of those picnics that I got up the nerve to ride my first roller coaster, The Little Dipper, that was located back by the bandstand.

My favorite Kennywood memory happened only a few years ago. We were at the park for a company picnic and one of the guys I worked with was from Rwanda. He had been in the U.S. for about 5 years, but never attended the company picnic because he was waiting for his wife and children to join him in the U.S.

His family finally joined him in March and our picnic was at the end of June. His family was beautiful. Two boys ages 8 and 11. Our two families decided to explore Kennywood together. We had all been there many, many times and of course our kids were pros. It was amazing seeing the look on the faces of these two children who never experienced ANYTHING like it before. They were over-joyed at every little thing we take for granted! They loved the roller coasters, the water rides, the games, the food. They would get off of a ride and get right back in line for the same ride - not realizing that there was a park full of them. His wife had her very first lemonade, funnel cake and Potato Patch Fry!!!

At the end of the day, the only ride left open was the Turnpike. The kids rode it for 1/2 hour - over and over again, until it finally had to shut down for the night.

As we left the park we stopped in at the fudge shop and got some fudge. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

My favorite Kennywood amusement park moment was when I took my 7 year old son for the first time 3 years ago.  You would've thought I took him to Disney World.  As soon as we got off the bus he started run/skipping to the park.  He had this smile on his face that didn't leave until it was time for us to leave.  He asked me if Kennywood was "the best place in the wheeled (that's how he used to pronounce the word 'world')".

The last year the Laser Loop was in Kennywood I was 13 years old. I loved going upside down and there was no wait. My friends and I rode it over and over and over again. We did the same thing with the Roter right before Kennywood got rid of it. I guess we wanted to get our fill before they were gone. I don't think I could do that now!

I was born and raised in Orlando, FL and just moved here in October (my husband is from here).  SO I've been hearing all about Kennywood for years and we started going every summer when we visited.  Our tradition is to ride the Turnpike and we buy the magnets with the boys pictures.  They are on our fridge and our boys love to look at them.  Fun memories!!

My favorite Kennywood memories have happened the past few years, and will happen for years to come as long as my children grow and continue visiting the park.

That is, watching my 2 girls (and child on the way) ride the very rides I've ridden from visiting Kennywood just about every year since I was born.

In Kiddieland, the Ferris Wheel, Carousel, little Motorcycles, the Little Whip (although a newer version for them), the Elephants (which were the Little Rockets in the same spot when I was little), and in the big park the Auto Ride, Garfield's Nightmare (Old Mill), Turnpike, and of course the Merry Go Round are the rides that stir extra special memories for me.

As long as my children go to Kennywood, those memories will be even greater than the ones I made as a kid.

My favorite Kennywood memory was when my sister and my aunt got trapped on the Whip.  The bar wouldn't raise after the ride was done.  My tall, thin sister just slid out and hopped over the back of the car.  But my very very short aunt had to sort of wriggle and climb.  Watching her try to jump over the back of the car was one of the funniest things ever.

That same trip I learned that people really can turn green.  It was the first time my uncle and I had ever ridden the Steel Phantom and his face was the most awful shade when we got off!

My favorite Kennywood memory has to be the first time both of my sons got to ride the Thunderbolt together.  Their usual brotherly picking-and-grumbling ceased as they waited in line, turning instead to excited chatter as the older one described the "first GIGANTIC HILL!" to his little brother.  When they came off of the ride, the younger one, eyes wide, ran up to me and said, "MOM!  Can we ride it AGAIN?  And AGAIN?"

The older one pulled me aside and said, "I thought he was going to break my fingers, he was squeezing them so tight, but it was worth it!  He's so excited!"

I grew up in Pittsburgh, and the first ride on the Thunderbolt was a rite of passage for all of the kids in my family, and it's an indescribable thrill to be able to watch my own children go through it, as well.

My favorite is hard to choose.  I have so many. From when I was little and my whole family would go to the Westinghouse picnics, to the year that I worked there, to the first time that I took each of my kids there for the first time.  I can remeber feeling like it took FOREVER to get there even though we lived 10min. away and could see the park from our backyard!  The Rankin bridge seemed soooo long.  We would always park in the paid lot, (when it was still on the same side of the street as the park!) and while my mom was paying to get us in, my dad would take us to stand underneath the Laser Loop.  We would stand there waiting and waiting for that 2seconds that it would zoom over our heads.  We couldn't wait to get in the door.  Then we would head right to Noah's Ark, (the one year we went through 46 times in a row, it had to be a record...lol). We really thought we were big stuff when we were finally tall enough to ride in the "big park".  At the end of the day we would always, always ride the turtle then get our potato patch fries before we would once again walk under the Laser Loop (in hopes that we would once again get that rush as it went over our heads!) before we would get in the car and head home.  We had such great times!  I only hope that my 3 children will have the same types of memories that I have from my childhood.

By far my best Kennywood memory was last year.  My daughter was born in April '08 and when she was just 2 months old we took her on her first trip to Kennywood.  Her very first ride was on the carousel.  She had no idea what was going on but we were very excited to have her there as my husband and I both grew up in the area and yearly trips to Kennywood were a tradition.  It was a great day and Daddy even won her a stuffed animal that day that she keeps in her crib.  Now that she is 14 months old we are really looking forward to taking her back this summer and seeing the excitement as she really experiences Kennywood for the first time.

Kennywood is always about a new outfit for our catholic school picnic day.  It is about family and fun.  As a kid we loved it when we could go out on our own in the park.  But we always knew to meet back at the benches across from the Kiddieland entrance.  If our parents weren't there yet, we would be sure to have lots of other adults from the parish there as well.

My family's first experience at Kennywood was last summer and a favorite memory was made that day.  We attended with a large groupfrom our Steel Drum Band.  My 8 yr. old son was so excited to get to the park that he giggled in the back seat of the car the whole way there.  We ran through the part All Day, from ride to ride and had a ball.  It was getting dark and the park was about to close.  My son was so disappointed that his fun was over, when I noticed that my husband and 2 older sons were not with the group.  When I asked the others where they were, they said that they went on another ride, one last time ( an indoor coaster).  I looked at my 8 yr. old son and we both grinned and said, "Not without us".   Then off we ran, hand-in-hand, to the indoor ride.  We ran through the serpentine roped line, weaving our way through the maze and up the stairs and then we saw them, standing in line.  They looked at us with surprised looks.  My son and I both said in unison, "Not without us"!!!!!  We were then not so sad to leave the park after that.  My son and I laughed the whole way home.

My favorite childhood memory of being at Kennywood would have to be riding the Whip.  Nestled in by the wooded picnic area, nothng beat the feeling of whipping around that bend with your arms up and your body flinging side to side - you could not help but grin the biggest grin and laugh.  However, my favorite memory now has to be seeing my 70-some year old parents ride the same ride (now nestled in "Lost Kennywood"), along with our little ones, and seeing the sheer glee on their faces as they thouroughly enjoyed whipping around that bend. Priceless.

My favorite memories of Kennywood are from high school when I used to go with the band every year.  We always had so much fun.  My favorite would have been when a bunch of us rode the Raging Rapids and came off soaking wet.

My niece, who I pretty much am a mom to, accompanied my children and I to the kids area one day. As we're going from ride to ride, we run into the little phantom. My niece, deathly afraid of riding "things that flip and go fast", begs and begs me to ride with her because she can't handle it alone. So I gave in trying to get her to have some fun...and she threw up all over me afterwards. Figured.

My favorite Kennywood memory is becoming best friends with my friend Teri.  We were 11 and didn't like each other at school.  On the way out of the park, my parents saw hers in front of the Jackrabbit and decided to stop and talk.  As Teri and I glared at each other, our parents told us to go ride the Jackrabbit.  We grumbled out way onto the ride, sat in the front row, and by the time we got off, we were best friends.  30 years later, we still are!

my favorite kennywood memory....I wasn't there...but my Mom & Dad always tell the story of how they went to Kennywood on their first "blind " date and they kissed in the "old tunnel of love" ride....not sure what it's called these days.  I love hearing that story!

Dear Heather:

I would like to enter your Kennywood Day contest to win free tickets for your

"Mom Rules" Day.  Coincidently, my family was just talking last week of

arranging a night for us to attend an evening Kennywood session together.

Although your site is predominately for younger parents, I still enjoy the

information available and was surprised to find this contest!.

My two sons are 16 and 19 and I have been missing "quality time" which I find

difficult to arrange during their teenage years. In fact, last evening my 16

year old and I pledged to attempt to relax every evening together for five

minutes so that we can catch up on our lives.  Being together has taken on

new meaning since the death of their 23 year old brother, my son Glenn, in

February.  Unfortunately, their grandmother died the 7th of this month four

months later - so, it has been an unbelievable year.  We find that

togetherness is a time we can touch on each boy's mood and what is going on

emotionally and it is priority for my husband and I at this time.

So, In my attempt to come up with activities that we can all do together -

Kennywood came to mind.  Matt is turning 20 on June 24th so the timing is

great also!

How does this all connect to Kennywood memories?  Making tentative plans, we

laughed as we talked about our memories of Glenn's insistence that his two

younger brothers "buck it up" and ride the roller coasters with him.  Tired

of riding with his parents, he is trying everything in his power to have his

younger brothers ride with him, while they are trying anything to be cool

while at the same time turning him down.  It ultimately would move into an

argument of who is a "baby" and the planned "fun" Kennywood day would turn

into three brothers fighting over a coaster ride while we played referee!

Then it seemed so frustrating and now we laugh at the memory we each have of

that situation.  We have many memories of the park and look forward to making

more.

my first trip to kennywood was a westinghouse family picnic.  we were just out of college.  my husband had been working there less than a year, so i hadn't met a lot of his coworkers.

we arrived and some friends suggested we go on the raging rapids before the line got too long...

the waterfall "fell" right on me!

i then had to meet everyone, including the ceo, completely drenched from hair to squishy socks.

it was awful at the time, but is now one of my favorite kennywood memories

My favorite Kennywood memo was last summer when my family went to the park.  We stayed all day until park closing, we rode so many rides, and had a lot of fun.  We rode the aero 360 and the swing shot so many times.  My daughter couldn't wait to get to Kennywood to try out the 360 and she loved it. We also loved the Phantom's Revenge.  The water rides are pretty cool too.  Especially on a hot day!  Kennywood is a very nice family park. There is lots do for all ages. We are looking forward to going to Kennywood again this year!!!:)

I used to go to Kennywood with my parents when I was young and they were still together; they have since divorced.  Kennywood was a memory that I could always keep close to my heart and keep my family together.  We always enjoyed riding the coasters and screaming as we swooshed down the hills, driving on the turnpike where my dad sat back and relaxed, and even sitting down to just relax and grab a funnel cake and some potato patch fries.

Since that time when my parents split, I grew older, got married, had a child of my own and moved to NC.  Nothing was the same in NC as it is in PA so we just moved back last year.  I want my son, three years of age now, to be able to go to Kennywood this week for his first time and have the same memories with me that I had with my parents.  He is so excited and so am I to be going to Kennywood this week.

I'm really not sure if the earlier post were the winners... but I will take a shot with my favorite kennywood memories.

Every year we would go to Kennywood on our school's Kennywood Day. My favorite memory is turning the corner at the food stand to see my Mom and Dad sitting on the bench near the umbrellas (parachutes). They sat there almost all day long- it was always their favorite spot. Even now, every time I turn that corner I can see them sitting there, waiting to hear me tell them all about my adventures!

Kennywood is where I rode my first roller coaster (the Jack Rabbit) and it was really great to bring my own kids there 20 years later to take them for THIER first ride on the very same coaster :)

There have been so many memories for me at Kennywood, my first kiss in sixth grade to my first time with my children.  My most favorite memory was last year watching as my then 2 year old rode the jackrabbit not once or twice but 10 times.   He couldnt get enough of it and he would ask anyone that was with us to go on the jackrabbit.  It was great to just see his face each time in line as if it was the first ride all over again, the smiles will never be forgotten!!

My favorite memory is (and always will be) watching my kids devour the potato patch fries. I swear they would pay the admission price to Kennywood and not ride a single ride so long as they could eat the fries. Of course, that would never happen because there is not a single ride at K-Wood that my adventurous kids and their mother would not ride!

Back in the early 50's my parents took my twin sister and I to Kennywood when we were about 9 months old.  I came across a old black and white photo with all of us in front of Noah's Ark.  Those were the good old days.

One of my favorite memories of going to kennhywood would be running from ride to ride with my cousins and my dad following behind, and as a tradition our first ride was always the kangaroo and then as the park was closing our last ride would be the turnpike cars, we would stand in line for out cotton candy and laugh as we walked thru the tunnel to end our wonderful day at Kennywood park!

My favorite Kennywood memory was when I took my son for his very first ride on the Thunderbolt two years ago. We didn't think he was tall enough yet, but were happy to discover he was. Now he is a roller coaster fanatic, though I admit that when he wants to ride the Phantom's Revenge, either his dad or older cousin takes him.

My favorite memory was actually working there for a few seasons. I met a few boyfriends there ♥ & also tons of friends. It was very cool to work there in the early 90's. When the park closed at midnight it felt good closing it up!

I grew up in Pgh. but moved to FL in 1986.  Every year we came home for a visit in the summer and Kennywood was always at the top of our "to do" list.  My son LOVED Kennywood when we would visit - even after trips to Disney, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, etc., Kennywood was still his favorite park.   We moved back to PA (Butler) 4 years ago and still go to Kennywood a couple times a summer!
