Snips and snails and puppy dog tails...being a "boy mom"

I somehow always thought I'd have both a boy and a girl. And then my imaginary husband and I would split up the duties...he'd take the "boy" stuff and I'd take the girl stuff.

I imagined myself sitting in a pedicure chair next to my little daughter giggling over polish color, shopping the malls till our feet hurt and watching her take ballet lessons.

My husband could handle the frogs, fishing and soccer.

But life hasn't exactly turned out that way. I've got all boys. Which means that I have to take on some of the traditional "manly" duties of parenting.  I'm not sure I'm ok with this, but I have no choice.

I'm getting better, I'm actually enjoying soccer and willingly spent an hour in Cabela's the other day.

I did grow up in the country, after all, so this stuff isn't totally foreign to me.

PhotobucketBut last week it rained, which brought out the worms.  And my kids were facinated.  Not only did they want to watch them crawl and ask a million questions, they wanted to see one up close and personal.  But they were too scared so they sprung it on me...the question every boy mom dreads - "Mom, will you pick up the worm for us?"

So what did I do?

Picked up the worm of course.  Ewww.  But the boys loved it and I felt like a good mom. It was a long way from the pedicure chair but still a great moment with my kids that I'll never forget. Next thing I know we'll be fishing and I'll have to stab the hook (you see my husband is a born and bred city boy, I'm not sure he's ever actually seen a fishing pole).

I draw the line at frogs though, I'm not picking up any frogs. Or snakes. Definitely not snakes.

What have you done as a "boy mom" or a "girl dad" that you never thought you'd be doing?

My DD is totally into boy stuff.  So even though we have a 9 month old boy, we are already venturing into boy stuff with my daughter.  I'm thrilled because she will play dinosaurs for hours in her Disney Princess dress up shoes.  She is starting to get into trains.  You should have seen me trying to build a track the other day- never have I done anything like that - but I figured I better learn quickly. That is one thing I like about the trains - at least there are accessories.  I can do accessories.

Like you, I always just imagined myself with little girls...playing barbies, crafting, doing nails and makeup..etc.  Also, like you, I was blessed with 2 little boys. So instead of playing with dolls and talking princess I play with action figures and talk Star Wars and Indy Jones.  ( I never in a million years would have guessed that I would be so well-versed in the Star Wars saga as I am now! )  It has taken some getting used to and I still don't get it right.  I do stuff like  make the figures talk to one another (like playing barbies, right) but the boys hate that   Dad is much better at imaginary play with them than I am.

I never would have thought I would be able to put together bajillion piece Legos but thats what I do with my boys and I have to say that I am proud of myself because those things are hard!

One thing I will NEVER like are the video games.  I just cannot get the hang of it and have no interest in them whatsoever(fun Wii games aside-love those!)My 5 year old consistently kicks my butt in Lego Star Wars/Indy and Batman.

We still craft but in the "boy" way...lots of scribbling with whatever medium we are using quickly turnng to a mish-mosh color of grey with everything being over in about 15 minutes cause we are onto something else.

Oh-I could go on and on about  being a "boy" mom.  But you know what?  as much as I wanted that little girl I am having such a blast with my boys.  I really think that I am turning out to be a better mom to boys than I would have been to girls.  I think they fit my personality better.

I'm responding for my DH since we have two girls.  Probably the closet he has been to the "girl dad" was buying my oldest DD a princess fishing pole and a matching princess tackle box (yes, they make one).  Boy stuff with a girly touch.  Nice.
