I somehow always thought I'd have both a boy and a girl. And then my imaginary husband and I would split up the duties...he'd take the "boy" stuff and I'd take the girl stuff.
I imagined myself sitting in a pedicure chair next to my little daughter giggling over polish color, shopping the malls till our feet hurt and watching her take ballet lessons.
My husband could handle the frogs, fishing and soccer.
But life hasn't exactly turned out that way. I've got all boys. Which means that I have to take on some of the traditional "manly" duties of parenting. I'm not sure I'm ok with this, but I have no choice.
I'm getting better, I'm actually enjoying soccer and willingly spent an hour in Cabela's the other day.
I did grow up in the country, after all, so this stuff isn't totally foreign to me.
But last week it rained, which brought out the worms. And my kids were facinated. Not only did they want to watch them crawl and ask a million questions, they wanted to see one up close and personal. But they were too scared so they sprung it on me...the question every boy mom dreads - "Mom, will you pick up the worm for us?"
So what did I do?
Picked up the worm of course. Ewww. But the boys loved it and I felt like a good mom. It was a long way from the pedicure chair but still a great moment with my kids that I'll never forget. Next thing I know we'll be fishing and I'll have to stab the hook (you see my husband is a born and bred city boy, I'm not sure he's ever actually seen a fishing pole).
I draw the line at frogs though, I'm not picking up any frogs. Or snakes. Definitely not snakes.
What have you done as a "boy mom" or a "girl dad" that you never thought you'd be doing?
