A friend of mine in Texas is selling her house. She has her realty listing up online and as I was looking at it my first thought was how neat everything was. She's got three small children, and I didn't see a single toy in sight. I have no idea how she did it, even long enough to take a photo.
Just about that same day I opened my corner cupboard to get a glass and approximately 15 of them fell out onto my head. I screamed "THAT'S IT!" and asked Mike to take the boys outside for an hour while I cleaned/reorganized it.
And I felt sooooo good. Until I opened the silverware drawer. And the coat closet. And the medicine cabinet.
Every unseen space in my house has disentegrated into a state of complete disorganization. Every single space. It's just so easy to let those hidden places get a mess, to shove crap in them when I'm in a hurry or being too lazy to put it away properly.
And it's driving me bonkers.
I realized that if I had to sell my house the biggest challenge wouldn't be hiding the toys, it would be cleaning out the closets and drawers that people would open. So I made a list. A list of every single space that needs to be cleaned/organzied, even down to the little drawer on on our end tables. The list has at least 50 items on it.
My goal is to tackle a few a week (some are tiny, 10-minute jobs) and some are huge like our garage). I've already finished that corner cupboard and three drawers and one cupboard in my kitchen. I'm feeling better already.
I'm a huge fan of the term Mise en place, often used by chefs to keep a clean kitchen. It means "everything has a place and everything goes in its place". I'm trying to Mise en place my house. I think I'm going to have to break out the label maker.
So how do you do it? How do you keep things organized? Are you a fan of one of the online "plans" like Motivated Moms? Or a fan of organizers (this seems to be my go-to option, go to Target and spend hundreds of dollars on contaners/shelves/organizers)
I figure by the time I finish them all it'll be time to start over again.
(that drawer is still on the "to do" list, obviously) :) ---------->
