Sticks and stones (and head-on collisions) may break my bones...

I'm spent.  I just enjoyed a nice glass of wine (but just one) and some Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie.  Both were well-deserved.

We've got our first broken bone.   Thankfully it's nothing too serious but it sure does make for an interesting day.

Today we were hanging out at home/in the neighborhood because we had a landscaper here doing some work and I wanted to stay close. We took a walk to a neighbor's house (coincindentally the same neighbor I just wrote about this morning that will be Ben's new preschool teacher) and stopped in for an impromptu playdate.

I should mention my husband is out of town.  You might remember that when Ben got his head cut and needed stiches, I was also flying solo.

While we enjoying some coffee and conversation the kids started chasing each other around the circle that makes up our houses (living room, dining room, kitchen, family room and back around again - all of our houses are designed this way and it's a pretty typical game to play to chase each other around the circle).  We're not sure exactly what happened, but our best estimate is that Ben and Matthew somehow ended up around the same corner in opposite directions and had a collision.  Ben's forehead slammed into Matthew's nose.

Both were screaming, crying and freaking out. Matthew was bleeding profusely out his nostrils.

Ben's crying was pretty typical "I hit my head and it hurts and I'm angry, I want my mommy" cry, but Matthew's seemed worse. And the bleeding, oh my god, the bleeding. Ben's cut head last month didn't even bleed that quickly. It was just gushing, with big clots coming out. I'm not squeamish about blood and I know faces bleed a lot but even I was starting to get freaked out. And his nose was swelling.  Luckily the bleeding stopped as suddenly as it started, but his nose looked pretty banged up so after a call to his doctor, we headed in for an x-ray.

I have to say how much I adore MedExpress.  I knew they did x-rays there and figured I could save several hours if I went there first and then on to Children's if I really needed to (but the bleeding had nearly stopped and the swelling looked much better by the time we were on the road, so I figured it was just a precaution, that nothing was really broken)

They got us in and out in less than an hour (so thankful for this as I was alone and had no toys, lunch or anything to entertain the boys with) with three x-rays, an exam, two stickers for each boy and the diagnosis - A broken nose.

My poor baby broke his friggin nose!

Luckily it's a small "crack" (I saw the x-ray) and the doctor said we just need to watch the bleeding, keep him safe for a few days and it'll heal on it's own.

So this summer has ushered in our first stiches and first broken bone.  And both while I was home alone.

I'm not sure if that's a sign of my luck or my parenting skills ;)

I'm sure you really don't need to hear this but ....it's not you or your luck.  It's just the nature of having boys.  Times and society may change but unfortunately young males are immune to all that and well ...boys will be boys.

We've learned that stitches can happen even when they aren't running and fooling around though.  One day we were at the store and our son just turned around to get another thing from our cart and fell and hit his head on the cart (3 interior and 11 exterior stitches just above the eyebrow)  Then another time was when he was playing that same game you mentioned (run around the circle) with hiw little brother and our former babysitter (former only bc she went to grad school not bc of the stitches). he ran into a wall when he turned to see if she was still chasing him (3 stitches at the hairline).

I hope Ben's nose heels nicely and quickly and maybe they'll learn to run in the same direction (probably not) ;)

I experienced the first broken bone on my own too.  Same with my dd - the scream was different than the usual "I fell down and want sympathy" scream.  It is amazing how we can hold up when we need!!!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery on Matthew's nose!

Poor Matthew...but I'm guessing it won't slow him down and hopefully (but probably unlikely) this is the last of the broken bones!  Dylan tripped over the leg of an upright fan and broke his arm at 22 months...you are the fourth person that I know or have been told about that has a child with a  broken bone this summer.  I think summer just brings with it, more running around and activity and hence more injuries!  And the fact that it happened on your clock  is inevitable since you are home with them more and they are more probably more active during the day (although I know Ben's injury  was a late-night one!) than at night when Mike is typically home with them!
