Our first non-animated television show!

I'm all about the milestones over here at PittsburghMom  :)  I think I've posted about such things as walking, potty training and starting school. Now I get to brag that we've hit another milestone in our house. We've discovered our first non-animated television show that the boys like!

Last week a friend of mine posted a status update to Facebook that she took her 5-year-old daughter to see "Ramona and Beezus" and they loved it. I was instantly jealous, because if something isn't animated my kids won't have anything to do with it.

But then we saw a commercial for a television show, and true to my kids' desire to want all things seen in commericals, they asked to watch it.

It wasn't on for a few days so I set the DVR to record it.  One night later that week I was perusing the DVR and noticed it. I asked the kids if they wanted to watch and they said yes. Then the proceeded to sit through the entire episode and even asked for more when it was done.

Hooray! A show we can all watch together! I know it's a silly little milestone, but it's great to be able to sit down and watch something together that doesn't involve Swiper or little red monsters talking about themselves in third person.

And the show?

It's highly educational (not) and a good influence (not) and great fun to watch (true).

It's Wipeout.

Yes, the show where they create elaborate courses with the sole goal of getting people to wipe out into a pool full of muddy water.  My boys love it.  Especially the sound effects.

And Matthew watches it like it's his JOB.  He listens to every word they say about the obstacles and repeats them back to me verbatim. He'll say 'Mom, the sucker punch is the most daunting challenge" or "The beauty is in the design, she didn't see the sweeper arm coming at all"

I know it's crap, but it's fun to watch as a family. Even Ben loves it.

Have you entered into the non-animated world yet?  What was the first non-animated television show or movie that your kid(s) really enjoyed?

I'm looking forward to the day we can go see a movie that isn't animated. That'll be our next "milestone".

If you've never seen Wipeout, here's a little taste

For the longest time the only thing my son would watch period was Austin Powers: the Spy Who Shagged Me.  He wouldn't watch any PBS, Noggin, Nick Jr, Baby Einstein, etc.  He's since started to watch regular kid shows, so we have been distancing ourselves from that other show.  It would be embarrassing now that his speech can be understood.  I can just see him talking to Fat Bas**rd!

I'll turn in my mother of the year award for that year and hang my head in shame.  The hour of sleep it afforded me while pregnant with number two was worth it.

my 5y/o likes America's Got talent.  We watch it sparingly and he only gets to see a few acts (of our choosing) now and then.

But he loves a few non-animated movies.  Charlotte's Web, Pete's Dragon, and now Mary Poppins.

He WILL watch nature documentaries on birds, animals, and insects.  This is a gene that must have come from me. And he'll watch full length astronomy and/or NASA type shows.  He gets GLUED to them like a little sponge soaking it all in.  I'm loving it.

My kid watched "That's So Raven" at a pretty young age (4 for sure, but maybe as early as 3). Then she started watching "Suite Life." Both are Disney shows.

Now that she is almost 7, she enjoys cooking and house hunting/selling shows, which is great because it is something we can watch together. She also watches iCarly, which I can't stand but my husband likes (so he watches that with her).

I had to laugh.  My kids discovered Wipeout because I was checking it out on Hulu and they love it.
