If you reside in the Pittsburgh area, chances are your maternity hospital offers cord blood options through The Dan Berger Cord Blood Program. This one-of-a-kind program offers expectant mothers three options: donate to a public bank (ITxM) or to research with no fees or preserve in one of three private banks (contracted with Cord Blood Registry, Viacord, CorCell).

Umbilical cords and placentas are routinely discarded as medical waste. But cord blood is rich in stem cells, which have been used to treat over 40 diseases including leukemia and lymphoma. Why let something like cord blood go to waste?

If you have questions regarding your cord blood options, please visit www.danbergercordblood.com or reply to this forum and I will do my best to answer your questions. Or speak with your physician.

I look forward to conversing about this thriving program!!

Thank you so much for posting this.  It is too late for me but I'm glad to see this is finally possible.  I was shocked when I was handed a letter mid-pregnancy with my second child that read basically told us, Magee personel would not collect the blood, our doctor would not collect the cord blood, we were NOT allowed to obtain a kit to collect the cord blood ourselves, etc.  This was in 2007.

With both children (2005-2007) I did internet searches to see if anyone in the Pittsburgh area would collect the blood, if there was a blood bank, if there was a currently open research study to donate to....NOTHING.  I was so disappointed at such a wasted opportunity.  I didn't want the cord blood for my family, I just wanted it to help somebody, anybody.

THANKS!!!!!  I'm glad to see this option is becoming a reality in this area.  I don't have plans to have any more children at this time, but if anything changes that I am definitely on board for cord blood donation.  I will share this reference as well.  Thanks!

For my DD we did VIAcord.  Very easy and very happy with the decision.  It was costly  but to us it was worth the money.  When my DS was born we chose not to store the cord blood.  I did want to donate but my local hospital did not participate.  I really wish they had and I'm glad to hear that their are donation/research options in Pittsburgh for all expecting moms and if we decide to go for baby #3.

We banked my first child's blood privately, flaked with our 2nd and it went to waste, but with our 3rd delivery at Magee, we donated -- it was really simple and we were happy to have it go to good use!

Nichole - It is unfortunate that cord blood options were not offered when you were having children. I guess better late than never. Thank you for sharing this resource with pregnant women you may know.
