The Saxonburg area is very nice.  It's a nice little town.  I honestly don't know how the school compares testing wise against other schools.  I know that they've added a lot of advanced placement classes and such since I graduated.  It's South Butler School District.  It would probably be about 30 minutes for him to go to work.

I agree with you Saxonburg is a really nice place to move.  I dont know how the cost of living fares relataive to other places around there, but if your looking to move it has a great school system. If you still have questions what i did was i asked my moving company to help me out with finding a decent place since they usually know all the areas around their location really well.

Another great school district that's a bit more "country" is Buffalo from what I've heard.  We had friends that lived in Sarver and they chose it because of the school district.

I wouldn't say, though, that Hampton is snooty in any way. I think they're very down to earth middle class people (maybe white collar middle class as opposed to blue collar, but still very nice and friendly people)

When you get into Franklin Park, Fox Chapel, etc.  you will find the "BMW crowd" that you might want to avoid.

(Although we live in Fox Chapel school district and it's such a range...we're by no means a BMW crowd and neither are my neighbors...with a big district like that you get the whole spectrum)

I wouldn't really want to move all the way to Butler, Beaver, etc. though unless you REALLY have the desire to be in the country. If you're ok with suburbs, there are a lot of great places (Hampton beinng at the top of that list) that would be much closer to your husband's job.

    HI Tracy

Here's a link to the top regional school districts: http://pittsburgh.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/stories/2009/05/18/focus17.html

I would definitely choose Hampton if I were you .  I am right next store in Richland and as soon as I feel I can sell my house I am moving there as the school is amazing and it is small-just 5 square miles.  However, from your description I am not sure it would be for you.  It CAN be a little materialistic but not as bad as others.

You are fortunate that your husband will be working right near the turnpike-this will open up many areas for you.  In 10 minutes to 1/2 hour you can be in Cranberry/Beaver in one direction and the AK Valley and Monroeville (close to Westmoreland county) in the other.

I would say the farther you get out of Pittsburgh the more of a community feel you will get.  If I were you I would use the size of the school district as a first step.  Then come and be prepared to drive-and bring a map/GPS!  I still get lost around here.  And pittsburghers are pretty friendly so ask questions of anyone you see out in the neighborhoods.

    Good luck to you.

We just moved to the area in July and bought a house in November.  We had been looking in Beaver for several months and ended up finding a place in Mars (Butler county).  We are soooo happy we picked this area because it is a very friendly small town with a smaller school system than those in Allegheny county.  Mars is about 5-7 minutes from Cranberry and only a few minutes from Rt 8.  Our occupational therapists drives here from Hampton and it's about 30 minutes away.  Mars "borough" is the "town" part of it (main street has a few tiny eateries, small grocery, drug store, hardware, doctor, dentist, library, not much else).  Then there are several "plans" going up in the country part of it with lots of new houses.

The school district is Mars Area School District and there is only one elementary school, but it's divided by age into different buildings.  My kids haven't started there yet since we are finishing the year homeschooling, but most of what we've heard is good and most of the buildings are new within the last 10 years.   I've heard some people say that it has always been a small town school where everyone knew everyone, but the growth in the area is making it a little less so.  Many of the housing plans are a little on the ritzy side compared to common folk like me, but no one around here seems snotty.  And the school has plenty of variety between the new people moving into those plans along with the town kids and the country kids.

Butler county has the LOWEST property taxes between Beaver, Allegheny, and Butler.  It allows you to buy a little more expensive house for your money (although much of the housing is priced higher due to the growth and demand here).  Check into it because it is such a nice area and everyone has been so friendly to us.  We just love our neighbors in the borough.
