So what is the going rate per hour for a sitter (not for daily childcare)?  Does it depend on the age of the sitter?  Teenager, early twenties, etc.  Would this be considered when paying someone?  Finally, how do people afford to go out for the evening and pay the sitter?

I've been informed by others that it depends on serveral things:

#1 the age of the child AND the number of children that are being babysat.

#2 Also want to take into consideration the time of day the babysitter is there.  For example: a Friday or Saturday evening may be a little more $$$, especially with a teenager babysitting (those are popular "going out nights" for a teenager).

#3 How long is the child/children awake?

And I don't know how people afford it these days.  I'm thankful we have family close by to watch our little boy when needed...saving us $$$.

Good luck and hope you get a day/night out soon...enjoy!

I think it definitely depends on the age of the sitter.

We pay our teenage babysitter $7.50 per hour

There are two other teenage sitters in our neighborhood that we've used that charge $5 and $8.

We have an  adult that we use (a former daycare teacher who knows the kids). We take the kids to her house and she and her husband watch them along with their 3-year-old son so there's bult-in entertainment. The kids LOVE going there. We pay her $12 an hour (that price was my idea, she probably would have only charged $10?)

Oh, and about the total cost. It's PRICEY!

We never go to movies, we figure we can't afford to pay for three hours of a sitter while we sit in the dark and not talk to each other.

We generally just go out for dinner and spend about 2 hours.

We had to go to a funeral/wake once and it cost us like $50 just for the sitter.

If we need to go out for an entire evening we try to do it when my parents or Mike's parents are in town.

It does depend on a lot of things. I am a babysitter for many families and a prior nanny. All the things previously mentioned are important, and it also depends on the provider. I have a ton of references, my clearances, and have taken child care courses. Therefore I am more expensive then some others. I charge between $10-$13 an hour. I am open for negotiation when the children will be sleeping during some of the time. I also bring my own child with me. Another important thing to mention is if your hiring a teenager you may pay less because they don't have bills to pay. This is my actual job that pays my mortgage.

Honestly being a mom myself, I can not afford to pay for a babysitter. I know its expensive but you are trusting this person with the most important thing in you lives. If I do something without my daughter I have to plan it around my mothers schedule so she can babysit.

Another good idea! If your going out with others that have children hire one person to wach all of them. The sitter will charge a lil more, but you get to split the cost!

Anyone looking for a babysitter, i'm available!

In high school in a wee little town...about 20 years ago I was paid about $3 per hour.  I babysat for coworkers just after undergrad and prior to having kids for about $9-10 per hour.

I have several recent college graduate coworkers who babysit on the side.  All ask for about $10/hr for a typical weeknight or weekend babysit.  It's significantly more if it's a holiday.  Our regular babysitter gets $10/hr (she's one of the recent college grad coworkers).  When the hour is not exact -  1-14min I round down, 15-29 is a 1/2 hour, past 40 is an hour.

We do have a hierarchy to consider when getting a sitter for our date nights though.  My sister-in-law gets first call, then the parents in law, then the sitter.  My s-i-l was very upset one day when i told her we had a sitter and she wasn't asked.  In my book...my inlaws are awesome.
