My 3.5 year old is going to drive me to drinking.  She literally changes her clothes 10 times a day.  She is not happy until the drawers are empty and the shoe box is empty also.  It is driving me crazy.  I am ready to put locks on the drawers and the closet door.  Does anyone else's kid do that and when do they outgrow this stage?

Are her toys she plays with everyday in her room? If they're not, put a hook and eye lock where she can't reach.  It won't stop her completely if she's a climber, but she may decide it's not worth the effort.  It will also buy you some time to catch her before everything is out of the drawers and closets.  Failing that, make her change back into what she had on and fold and put away what she dragged out.

May I have ten thousand marbles, please?

    Amy,

My 3 1/2 year old girl does the same thing, sometimes several times a day and sometimes not @ all.  I find clothes all over the floor, on her bed under her bed she usually completely empties out her drawers that have her socks and tights.  She will strip down to underwear also, usually after when she has used the bathroom.  I've talked to her about it but it gets me nowhere!  If she does put the stuff away it's just a mess and I have to clean it all up anyway.  The really bad part is she does not have a closet door and we can't put one on, it's an old house and none of the corners match up.  I have been told by my sister-in-law that her daughter did it as well and eventually grew out of it, not sure how old she was.  My boy never did it all that I can remember...  Sorry I guess I'm not offering any advice, just know you are not alone:)

When my sister's youngest was about that age she did the same thing.  Yes she has out grown the stage although it did take a good bit of time.  What about getting her a dress up box?  My niece loved wearing ballerina leotards and princess dresses.  At least that way she can have fun and you can have neat drawers and less laundry.

being the mother of a 5 year old - it only gets worst!!!

she changes her clothes less, but for a good year she would only wear dresses, and would break down in tears when she had to wear pants.  this winter, after buy her all dresses skirts and warm tights in the faill, she decided she only wanted to wear jeans.

it's a never ending cycle!!  i would just let her run her course, and perhaps only keep so many outfits in her reach.  you could also try buying her dress up clothes to keep her busy like darlene already mentioned!

    Ianette,

a few ideas for that closet??

In our first home (built in 1900) we had the same problem with a few doors.  They are more expensive but you can buy real wood interior doors and cut or plane them to match the odd angles.  So there's a way...just not an easy one if you'd like a door.

Otherwise you could get an extra tall metal door gate and install it.  The kind that have the vertical bars are harder to climb.

    hope that helps
