Try my dilema...
2yrs ago a relative bought my then 2.5y/o son a piece to the Duplo Lego Thomas the Train set for christmas. He played with is EVERYDAY and despite my doubts is survived VERY rough play with no broken plastic tracks, for 6months. It was Spencer, sold in EVERY store EVERYWHERE. By that summer, I decided to start shopping for christmas and so glad I did. I bought one of each thing available on the lego website (they only have about 2 sets available per year in addition to the starter set they always have). So I got the starter set, which the inlaws wanted to buy from me to give to him--fine was happy to do it, the other 2 sets available at a normal cost my mother bought from me give to him (all at the prices and shipping I paid of course). There were a few on Amazon.com that were reasonably above the normal price (about a $10-30 markup. Then there were those that are unavailable from lego now, so you can get from collectors and toy hoarders for upwards of $100-300. needless to say I didn't buy any for that high a price.
I called lego to ask if they'd ever be selling certain high demand characters again...the answer... sorry duplo is not our main marketing focus, as the kids that use them quickly outgrow them, so all that will be available is what we add to our site. Um QUICKLY outgrow...these are for 1.5-5y/o's. My 4.5y/o still loves all Duplo to this day and my 2y/o will plya with it for some time to come. The products for ages 5-8 is also very limited. So lego wants me to just sit around and not buy much from them until my child is 7 or 8? hardly seems like good marketing to me.
Anyway...we also bought extra track sets (4- 2 straight and 2 curved). The 2 straight sets I ordered them in July 2008 with a backorder date of Oct. 2008, then became backordered until after xmas (March). I was fine with that b/c their bdays are in April..then they were backordered until July. It took a full year to get those straight tracks. Whew!
Happy Christmas shopping folks. Doesn't matter what you want...or what your kid wants...guess we all can learn the lesson of not always getting what we want... and about the greed of others.
Sorry for your dilema. My kid isn't into that "it" thing just yet...I'm sure by next year...there will be that thing he has to have. Thankfully with the train he only wanted more pieces...he didn't care what they were. This year is the same so I ordered everything for the grandparents to give...and received them already. I haven't bought must of anything for anyone yet....getting scared....ugggh!
