I'm looking to purchase an educational toy for my 4 year grandson - LeapFrog? VTech? any suggestions would be appreciated.  I was considering the Leapster.

If you're thinking purely educational I'd recommend the Tag reader. It's great for helping kids learn to read and he's at the right age.

But I'd probably choose a Leapfrog Leapster over that. It's a video game, yes, but the games are very educational at that age (counting, spelling, etc) and I know my 4-year-old is really drawn to play with it because it's a video game and it doesn't *feel* like work.

I'm also a huge fan of the School Zone Kindergarten software that you can play on the computer. If the computer is something he's doing or has access to, this program is great.  It teaches counting, rhyming, numbers, telling time, etc and my son LOVES it.

(Even though he's 4, the kindergarten pack would be perfect for him)

The LeapFrog Leapster is great!  Purchased it for my 4 yr. old for his birthday in May and didn't really play with it too much at first.  But once he started pre-school, he plays with it all the time now (especially when we're driving long distances).  The games have different learning levels, so they can advance to the next level at their own pace.  It's been a FUN learning tool for my son.  It's really helped with his recognition of letters/numbers without him realizing that he's learning.  To him, it's just a game.  He's already asked Santa for the SpongeBob Leapster game.

Another nice thing about the Leapster is the optional travle case, which holds and additional 3 cartridges.  Small & compact...nice when you've got multiple kids to travel with.  So we pack up the case & we're set for the road.  (They've also come out with a messenger style backpack to store/carry the actual Leapster & all your game cartridges).

The inidvidual games can be expensive - ranges from $15 on sale to $24.99.  But if the child's just starting out, a game or two is sufficient.  I thought of the Leapster purchase as an investment.  Suggestion is to keep an eye out for sales - example Toys R Us just had the games on sale for $19 the few weeks leading up to Black Friday.  I have even seen the games on sale at Walmart.com for $15 with $.97 shipping.  To me, that's a deal.

Happy toy hunting!  And I'm sure you'll grandson will love whatever game he receives.

    Happy Holidays!

we have two leapsters.  i love them.  we have had one of them for almost 5 years now.  my older two are eight and six - they still play the spongebob games.  my youngest is four, and she loves it.  talking word factory is a good one, and counting on zero.

i can't say enough about their durability.  they have dropped them at least 100 times, and they still work!  when we are finally finished with them i am thinking of mailing them back to leap frog so they can see how well they survived.  :)

my dad sometimes finds games at marshall's or big lots, marked down to $5.

We also have 2 leapsters and the tag system and are going to get (I hope) the tag jr for my youngest for Christmas.  I would also highly recommend the leapster.  Ours recently (two days ago) took a very bouncy trip down our steps and still works!

Also wanted to let everyone know, for anyone who eats at Wendy's- their kids meals currently have leapfrog toys (cute miniature look versions of the tag system that do other things).  In each toy there is a $5 off coupon for leapfrog's website for any leapster game.  And, on the side of the bag is a $5 off coupon for tag books that can be used online or at any store that accepts coupons.

Connie, thanks for that tip about Wendys! I took the boys there for dinner tonight and we loved the LeapFrog toys!
