School fundraisers - how much is too much?

wrapping paperI got my first fundraising packet from Matthew's daycare when he was just 12 weeks old. It would have been sooner but he only started daycare when he was 10 weeks old.  This week alone I've received no less than three fundraising requests from the kids' schools.

I thought it was bad when they were both in daycare (together) and we got the Scholastic Books, Easter Candy, Christmas candy, Thanksgiving candy, etc.  But now that they're at two different schools we're getting completely different fundraising requests.

I have to say our new daycare is unique in that they hardly ever do typical fundraisers (wrapping paper, candy, etc), in fact, they've only done one so far this year (and that was the KidStuff coupon books that I LOVE).  Instead they make ornaments to take to the nursing home across the street, collect canned goods for the Food Bank and dog food to donate to the local animal shelter. I love this type of fundraising. It's not for the school itself, but rather for a charity and for some reason that feels easier to swallow for me.

But the public schools (kindergarten)? Oh my god, it's insane. I get the MarketDay flyers, wrapping paper sales, candy sales, magazine sales, PTO fundraisers, etc.  Nearly every single week something else has come home in Matthew's backpack.

I have to admit I hardly ever participate. It's not that I don't think the school is a worthy cause, it's just that I completely forget to fill them out in time. I do attend school functions/fundraisers and gladly participate and give them my donation.  But I feel like I just can't keep up.

Do you participate in school fundraisers? Do you have specific ones that you love or loathe?  And how is that Market Day food, anyway?
