Kids Birthday Registries - A new trend?

I got the following message from a local mom today

My son was recently invited to a birthday party where the birthday child was registered at Learning Express for gifts  It was the first time we had been invited to a child's birthday party with a gift registry but since then I have heard of other people who have had similar experiences.  Is this a growing trend?

I was particularly interested because I, too, just got a child's birthday party invite that included a registry (Toys R Us and Target in this case).

A quick google search shows me that it is indeed a growing trend, and lots of people are none too happy about it.

I personally see the practicality of a registry, particularly at weddings where the newlyweds are often the recipients of six toasters. But is it appropriate for a kid?  I'm inclined to say no, but I'd like to hear what you have to say.

Does allowing our kids to register send a message that they deserve to get what they want, all the time?

Does a young child (six, in the cases above) have enough maturity to smile and say thank you even if the gift was not from the registry?

Or are you a fan of the idea?  Does a gift registry allow kids to get what they really want, ensure the presents are actually put to use and eliminate the hassle of having to drive to the store and exchange?
