Family Movie Night

A couple of months ago Mike went with his friends to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie.  That inspired him to borrow the first couple of Pirates movies (and given our recent trip to Disney) try and watch them with the boys.  He put them on the big screen tv in the basement and watched the first movie for 20-30 minutes a night with the boys while I was out running.  They seemed to really enjoy it in small doses like that.

Now that school is out and we can let the kids stay up later, I want to start instituting "Family Movie Night" once a week or so.  We happened to be at the Giant Eagle on Route 8 in Pine Township the other day and noticed that they still have an "Iggle Video" with lots and lots of movies.  I really do miss a real movie store. The Redbox is convenient, but so limited.

While perusing in the video store the other day I saw the movie ET.  Oh how I want to show this to my kids!  Unfortunately it was checked out, but there were several other non-animated family friendly movies to choose from.

I think the boys are at an age where we can move into watching some movies that are not animated. I love a Disney movie like anyone else, but after 6 years of nothing but cartoons I'm ready for some real people.

On Wednesday, while we were at the store, we rented "Flubber" with Robin Williams. Remember Flubber?  It was fun and Matthew was really into it. Ben got squirmy, but he did hang for most of it.

So I want to make a list of non-animated movies that I'd love to check out and watch with the boys.  So far I have:

  • ET
  • Star Wars
  • Honey I Shrunk the Kids
  • Back to the Future
  • Wizard of Oz
  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid
  • Harry Potter

  • What else should I add to the list?  What movies, new or old, appeal to an elementary school crowd?
