grade-aBefore we lived in our current home we lived in Cranberry.  We loved living in Cranberry (except the traffic and our tiny house) but knew that we'd need to move when we had kids.  Not so much because it was a bad area to raise kids, but mostly because my husband worked 45 minutes from home and he worked late hours.  I was worried that we'd never have dinner together as a family. So once we started family planning we also planned to move.

We never really researched school districts but we knew that there were several districts in the region that are known as "good schools".  My husband works in Fox Chapel and that was one we'd always heard of as being one of the good ones, so we decided to move to our current home.

Since that time I've seen the annual report of Best Schools and I'm always pleased to see Fox Chapel on the lists.  Now that we have a child actually in the district I can say that we're very pleased with the quality of education he's receiving. The teachers and excellent and the level of instruction is better than we imagined.

This week, the Pittsburgh Business Times released its 2012 list of best schools.  The top ranking school in the region is actually Upper St. Claire, followed by Mount Lebanon and North Allegheny.  Our district, Fox Chapel, comes in sixth place out of the 105 schools in the list.

Now that I'm a parent, I realize the value of a good education and I'm thankful our region provides great schools for our children.

What school district are you in? How important is a top-ranking school to you?
